"PHOTOGRAPHER TO THE TEJANO STARS"
Antonio “Tony” Vasquez Promoter / Events Producer, Fort Worth Texas.
I have been Producing, Promoting, Booking, Tejano and Conjunto Events since 1970. It all began when I was a junior at R. L. Paschal High School, A predominantly all white school, with less than 20 Mexican Americans and 5 African Americans. I and Little Joe’s niece Rosie had our first taste in booking a band, having just booked her Uncle Little Joe y La Familia (New album release Las Nubes), We were raising money for a Chicano school outing.
I had grown up in a family that always played Mexican, Tejano-Chicano music daily. From Antonio Aguilar, Pedro Infante, Miguel Aceves Mejias to Freddy Martinez, Sunny Ozuna, and The Royal Jesters, and many more in between.
While in High School, I worked for various Community Organizations, The Worth Heights Youth Center, Mayor’s Youth Council, The Community Action Agency. I had the privilege to produce fund raisers for these organizations, booking bands and having Dances at Dance Halls, Jamaicas, and Street Dances.
After working at a couple jobs including, Southwestern Bell Telephone – First Male Long Distance Telephone Operator (1 year) -1973, First National Bank Data Entry Dept. (5 years) 1974-1979. In 1979 I ended up getting a full time job at an Aerospace company named General Dynamics, (Got My D.O.D. Dept of Defense Secret Clearance), about 15 years later General Dynamics was bought by Lockheed Martin, and yes I retired from there after 30 years. Worked in Special Programs, Reproduction and Printing, Blue Print Distribution, Document Control, Mail Services, Microfilm and was Union Steward for about 20 years for O.P.E.I.U. While working at Lockheed Martin, I was still throwing Tejano Music Dances and doing fund raisers for organizations, and Judges. I was a campaign manager for a few candidates here in Tarrant County, I worked on campaigns for a few Senators, Mayors, City Councilmen, and Judges.
In the mid 80’s, while still holding a Full Time job, I began to produce Classic Car Shows, and Low Rider Car Shows, started my own car club named The Southwest Classic Cruisers. I really enjoyed buying, building, and selling classic cars, a hobby of mine that grew through time. At this time I registered my DBA Showtime Classics International and I began producing large and small outdoor Car shows and Tejano Concerts. I produced events at local Hamburger joints throughout DFW, the Fort Worth T-Parking Lot, and North Side Marine Park. Doing these events got me invited in 1987 by another promoter to do an indoor event inside the Downtown Fort Worth Convention Center, a Classic and Low-rider Car Show with Tejano y Conjunto Music. A Huge success! A few years later I registered a New DBA Showtime Latino Entertainment, Ever since then in I ventured out on my own and started doing Car shows and Tejano Music Concerts inside the Ft. Worth Convention Center. I kept going and doing 3 Indoor Shows annually till 2001.
In 1984, reminder I was still holding a Full Time Job, I started doing outdoor events in Downtown Fort Worth in front of the Fort Worth convention center on 9th St. and Main St. and I Produced Concerts and Car Show inside the Houston Astro Domain Complex, Indoor Concerts and Festivals throughout the State of Texas, places like West Texas, South Texas and especially here in DFW. Throughout the years I worked closely with various Dallas radio stations such as KLUV, Wild 100, 97.9 The Beat, KSSA, and others, and various Clubs and Sports Bars. About this same time frame I became part owner in a Hispanic / Mexican Newspaper in Ft. Worth, which lasted several years. In late 2008 I was at FTW 87.7 FM Station.
2009 I ventured out and started Tejano Gold Radio and registered the DBA Tejano Gold Radio, an Internet Radio Station on USTREAM, with over 140,000 followers. I have published my own Tejano Magazines, Titled; Tejanos Today, and Tejano Gold Radio The Magazine. I am owner of Tejano Gold Radio on the Net, Produce a weekly Community News Talk show. I am also a member of L.U.L.A.C. Council 4743, District 21, here in Ft. Worth.
Throughout the years I learned how to listen and watch other event producers and promoters, always looking to see how I could improve my events. I learned how to save money, by doing things on my own (producing events costs lots of money). I learned how to be a Graphic Artist, a Web Designer, Radio Sound Engineer, Re-Mastering Music, Magazine Layout Design, Editing, Writing, Photography, Event Producing, Draftsman, Marketing, Promoting, Party planning, Club Management, Band Bookings, and so much more.
I didn’t do this all alone, my wife Brenda Vasquez was always there to help me out. Brenda was the one at the Water and Soda booth or at the window at the Convention center; she has been there at every event, along with my sons Anthony and Marc. My two sons were born into these events. I always had a team of people helping, working with me. Made many friends every year, and many of my friends have also passed on. Without these friends none of this would have been possible. Fort Worth is lucky to have so many Tejano Music fans. Without, there would be No Tejano Music Events, Festivals in Downtown Ft. Worth
I am mostly proud of having produced “31 Years”, The Annual Downtown Ft. Worth Cinco De Mayo Fiesta, The Downtown Ft. Worth Fiestas Patrias / Latin Fest. And I am also proud to have accepted the responsibility of Producing the Downtown Ft. Worth 54th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Mexican Independence Day Parade that my family members started in 1965’. The largest Mexican American Parade in Fort Worth and possibly the State of Texas. We have appeared in the Ft. Worth La Estrella News Paper several times, FT. Worth Weekly, and many Local Mexican American Newspapers and Radio Stations. Throughout the years I have given many political candidates, City Council People, the opportunity to promote their selves, and hundreds of Exhibitors, Vendors the opportunity to sell and showcase their business. I have helped many organizations and individuals to raise funds, have helped those in need and continue to remind young people to celebrate their Culture, and not forget who they are and where they came from. I have always fought off those who have always doubted me.
